Flooding Update: Ice Jams Spark Flash Flood Warning

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A flash flood warning for ice jams is in effect for Polk and Dallas counties on Wednesday morning.View Latest Warnings County-By-County
At 6:53 a.m., local law enforcement officials reported flash flooding across the area under the warning. Water was rapidly rising across portions of George Flagg Parkway and SW 30th near the Raccoon River in downtown Des Moines.Some locations that will experience flooding include areas along the Raccoon River in Des Moines and West Des Moines. Law enforcement also reported ice jamming continues in Dallas County near Van Meter. Upstream, the Raccoon and Middle Raccoon rivers were both nearly ice free. Considerable ice cover remains along the North Raccoon. Ice flowing from the North Raccoon will continue to be a threat for additional ice jamming.At 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, the stage was 9.1 feet and falling. Flood stage is 16 feet. The river is expected to rise above flood stage Thursday morning, and continue rising to 20.7 feet Monday morning.Water levels will fluctuate along the Raccoon River through Dallas and Polk counties. A sudden release of the ice could result in flash flooding downstream of Van Meter.
